Carol Shelton Stopping By

So when the recent raging fires take your home but not your winery, what should one do?? Well if you are pioneering winemaker Carol Shelton you hit the road with a bunch of your wines. We are lucky to welcome Carol here for a casual tasting of some of her iconic California wines this Wednesday from 6-8 pm. Antonio Lopez will be providing some live entertainment as well.

Back when the glass ceiling still hung over the wine making industry, Carol was early to punch holes through it. Through an indomitable spirit and tireless work ethic she not only perservered but managed to work side by side with such icons as  André Tchelistcheff at Buena Vista and Peter Lehmann at Saltram in Australia. Her time making wine with these wine icons would be invaluable as she laid the foundation as a winemaker in Sonoma County.

Her accolades would fill many pages, she has won Winemaker of the Year five times, has countless gold medals for her wines at Rodney Strong not to mention her own labels, was named one of eight Pioneer Women Winemakers of Sonoma County and recently her 2011 Wild Thing Zinfandel was included in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines.

She'll be on hand as we pour four of her current releases, the Wild Thing Chard and Old Vine Zin, her subtle and nuanced Carnaros Pinot Noir and the Karma Zinfandel from Sonoma. A tasting flight of all four is only $8 and we'll have special pricing on these in the Wine Cellar also. So come on out and support a great winemaker by enjoying some delicious wines!

Orchard Wine Cellar Movers and Shakers This Week

  • Bonavita Red

    #1 Bonavita Red

Made from four grapes harvested later than usual to achieve a greater ripeness and smoothness. A deep and inky wine, with ripe plum and blackcurrant aromas. Nice ripe fig and cherry with chocolate and licorice flavors. Just enough oak to give it some backbone.
    (Holding the #1 spot)

  • Armas de Guerra Rose

    #2 Armas de Guerra Rose

My heavens! 50+ year old, organic Mencia vines from some of the highest vineyards in Bierzo. Subtle aromas of strawberry, pink grapefruit and white pepper play with clean river rock minerality touched by zesty key lime. Balance and finish are tied together with a vibrating acidity. Structured and executed like a world class ballerina doing flamenco. Sells out every year for good reason. Lighter than Provence, a different planet than White Zin. The only hard part is only opening one bottle at a time. (behind by 18 bottles)

  • Tintero Moscato

    #3 Tintero Moscato

Sori Gramella refers to the one of the only single vineyard Moscatos, and Marco is the only producer to bottle this striking limestone amphitheater commercially. Once the 30 year old vines give up their bounty, and the grapes are harvested and pressed, they are kept in stainless steel at a low temperature to prevent fermentation until an order is received in order to provide the freshest wine possible. (behind by 12 bottles)

  • Sweet Sunset Chocolate Merlot

    #4 Sweet Sunset Chocolate Merlot

First lets say that this is Not ChocoVine. This wine is actually made with eighty five percent Merlot and than has natural chocolate cream added to the mix. This is the wine for anyone looking for sweet red or the chocolate lover at home. Great gift for the holidays. (behind by 2 bottles)

Fun New Arrivals

  • Chateau Deux Rocs

    Chateau Deux Rocs

A rose of lovely character, with fleshy red fruit and floral aromas. Its intense fruit and tannic backbone will make it the perfect match for spicy Mexican or Thai food.

  • Poseidon Pinot Noir

    Poseidon Pinot Noir

From vineyards with a view of the bay comes this well balanced, lively and delicious Pinot Noir. A easy drinking, medium-bodied wine showing off some rare and black pepper spiced Hungarian oak to balance the raspberry aromas and flavors.

  • Chateau Redortier Beaumes de Venise

    Chateau Redortier Beaumes de Venise

Wine geeks know of Gigondas and Vacqueras that show off Grenache like no other. Bordering both is Beaumes de Venise which is known for fortified Muscat. On a steep hillside (at 1500 ft!) twin sisters Sabine and Isabelle make this earthy, spicy blend of Grenache, Syrah and Counoise. A gorgeous wine.

  • Broc Carignan

    Broc Carignan

From 130+ yr old vines, and on original rootstock comes this remarkable Carignan. All native yeasts, no SO2 used during production means pure bright flavors of tart cherry, blueberry and unmistakeable juicy tang from carbonic maceration. Why spend $34 on wine.com?
