Carol Shelton Stopping By

So when the recent raging fires take your home but not your winery, what should one do?? Well if you are pioneering winemaker Carol Shelton you hit the road with a bunch of your wines. We are lucky to welcome Carol here for a casual tasting of some of her iconic California wines this Wednesday from 6-8 pm. Antonio Lopez will be providing some live entertainment as well.

Back when the glass ceiling still hung over the wine making industry, Carol was early to punch holes through it. Through an indomitable spirit and tireless work ethic she not only perservered but managed to work side by side with such icons as  André Tchelistcheff at Buena Vista and Peter Lehmann at Saltram in Australia. Her time making wine with these wine icons would be invaluable as she laid the foundation as a winemaker in Sonoma County.

Her accolades would fill many pages, she has won Winemaker of the Year five times, has countless gold medals for her wines at Rodney Strong not to mention her own labels, was named one of eight Pioneer Women Winemakers of Sonoma County and recently her 2011 Wild Thing Zinfandel was included in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines.

She'll be on hand as we pour four of her current releases, the Wild Thing Chard and Old Vine Zin, her subtle and nuanced Carnaros Pinot Noir and the Karma Zinfandel from Sonoma. A tasting flight of all four is only $8 and we'll have special pricing on these in the Wine Cellar also. So come on out and support a great winemaker by enjoying some delicious wines!

Orchard Wine Cellar Movers and Shakers This Week

  • Bonavita Red

    #1 Bonavita Red

Made from four grapes harvested later than usual to achieve a greater ripeness and smoothness. A deep and inky wine, with ripe plum and blackcurrant aromas. Nice ripe fig and cherry with chocolate and licorice flavors. Just enough oak to give it some backbone.
    (Holding the #1 spot)

  • Gran Passione

    #2 Gran Passione

From the land of Amarone comes a delicious Merlot based blend. To perfectly ripe Merlot (60%) is added juice from dried Corvina grapes ala Amarone. Rich, deep and smooth, this is a remarkable Merlot that may just change your Merlot worldview! (behind by 4 bottles)

  • Laya

    #3 Laya

From Castilla-La Mancha in Central Spain, a unique blend made with the Garnacha Tintorera grape. Not only is the skin red, but so is the flesh. This provides a sturdy structure and noticeable tannins. Aged only 4 months in oak, this wine has luscious red and black fruits with hints of spice. Definitely one you should try, especially at this price! (behind by 14 bottles)

  • Tintero Moscato

    #4 Tintero Moscato

Sori Gramella refers to the one of the only single vineyard Moscatos, and Marco is the only producer to bottle this striking limestone amphitheater commercially. Once the 30 year old vines give up their bounty, and the grapes are harvested and pressed, they are kept in stainless steel at a low temperature to prevent fermentation until an order is received in order to provide the freshest wine possible. Fun New Arrivals

  • Gewurz

    Gewurz

A CA Gewurztraminer crafted in the style of those from the Alps. Great crisp minerality, rose petal and lychee notes, with bright acidity to hold it together. All organic from the rugged and cooler Potter Valley in Mendocino. Try with grilled chicken or pork chops to see what a great food wine this is!

  • Armas de Guerra Mencia

    Armas de Guerra Mencia

An excellent introduction to Bierzo's native varietal, the palate is fresh, elegant, and clean. Energetic aromas of fresh blue fruits, violet and white pepper, plus a subtle touch of licorice. Supple and gently sweet on the palate, offering sappy boysenberry and floral highlights with a hint of smokiness.

  • Three Brooms

    Three Brooms

This single vineyard, certified sustainable sav blanc shows lovely white flower, chili pepper, and gooseberry on the nose with some sandy mineralogy. Very nice weight and balance showing passion fruit, ripe apple flavors. Such a pleasant surprise is the roundness, the acid is lively and energetic but not abrasive.

  • Amon Ra

    Amon Ra

The 2014 Amon Ra reflects the tried and true essence of the Glaetzer style - generosity of flavor with finesse of structure. The inky purple color displays the gentle but full extraction. The nose shows an abundance of dark blueberry, vanilla, black cherry and hints of cassis with notes of mixed spice and anise. Although still young and firmly wound, the vibrant blackberry and dried spice flavors integrate well with youthful yet supple tannins with the trademark loooong and sleek finish. Meant to go 10 to 15 years to hit its prime.
