Domaine Eden Chardonnay - $29.00

Domaine Eden Chardonnay(No rating yet)

After years of too much oak and overripe fruit, its wonderful to see balance returning to CA chards. While there certainly is tropical pineapple, apricot and lots of buttery oak, the body is full and round with just enough acid to hold it together. Has a lovely long finish. This reputable vineyard claims this is the best they have ever made, I think I agree!

Although a drought year, 2012 shaped up to be a great season across all the varieties we grow. A late bud-break led to a long uneventful summer and fall with no significant heat to worry about. A slow, leisurely harvest in late September insured complete ripeness at moderate sugar levels.

This Chardonnay was entirely barrel-fermented and aged on the yeast sediments for added complexity for ten months. All fermentations were not inoculated as is our usual practice. Our motto is "nothing added, nothing taken away."

The grapes for this vintage come from Mount Eden fruit (60%) and Domaine Eden fruit (40%), reflecting a classic expression of the Santa Cruz Mountains.  A pale yellow color, tightly-wound acidity, and moderate ripeness with a dazzling finish, this wine is what I have been aiming for since 2004, when we began selecting barrels of declassified estate chardonnay for our Domaine Eden program. Subtle lemon, hazelnut, herb and earth aromas give way to flavors of citrus, toasty oak and mouthwatering acidity. For those who love Chardonnays which display restraint and finesse, this is for you. The finish is, of course, long and nuanced, giving an expectation for a long evolution in the bottle.

Orchard Wine Cellar Movers and Shakers This Week

  • Tintero Moscato

    #1 Tintero Moscato

Sori Gramella refers to the one of the only single vineyard Moscatos, and Marco is the only producer to bottle this striking limestone amphitheater commercially. Once the 30 year old vines give up their bounty, and the grapes are harvested and pressed, they are kept in stainless steel at a low temperature to prevent fermentation until an order is received in order to provide the freshest wine possible.

    #3 Fiore Nebbiolo

A beautifully balanced Nebbiolo. Aromas of dried violets, earth and hints of anise. The palate yields more savory earthiness, dark cherry, pomegranate, subtle notes from oak. Enough tannin to wait a few years, but enough acid to approach now. We envision a glass of this next to a piece of roast lamb. (behind by 12 bottles)

  • Armas de Guerra Rose

    #4 Armas de Guerra Rose

My heavens! 50+ year old, organic Mencia vines from some of the highest vineyards in Bierzo. Subtle aromas of strawberry, pink grapefruit and white pepper play with clean river rock minerality touched by zesty key lime. Balance and finish are tied together with a vibrating acidity. Structured and executed like a world class ballerina doing flamenco. Sells out every year for good reason. Lighter than Provence, a different planet than White Zin. The only hard part is only opening one bottle at a time. (behind by 3 bottles)
